What is Crack Sealing?
Crack sealing is the use of hot rubberized asphalt to seal cracks in asphalt. This prevents water from penetrating the sub-base and washing it out. It helps preserve the pavement adjacent to the cracks; prevents sand, stone, and dirt from making its way into open cracks causing compressive stresses; and extends pavement life by minimizing crack growth.
Using Time Striping to crack seal your pavements will prevent problems from spreading and double the life of the pavement. Pavement repair in the early stages of deterioration will pay big dividends later by delaying costly resurfacing.
How does Time Striping perform Crack Sealing?
- We suggest that two weeks before the work is to be done the property owner uses a non-selective herbicide to kill the weeds before the crack is sealed. It is also good to keep weeds on the edges of the asphalt under control. Certain types of grass and weeds are very destructive to asphalt; they seek the moisture under the asphalt and can literally push thru two or more inches of asphalt.
- Time then either routes or wire wheels the crack to remove debris and any weak material. This also leaves a reservoir to place the sealer.
- The cracks are then cleaned with a heat lance. A heat lance blows compressed air heated to over 2000 degrees; this blows any debris and dust out while drying any moisture that may be present.
- Crack sealer is injected into the crack by a spray wand hooked to our Cimline melters.
Neglecting pavement cracking usually leads to accelerated deterioration of the pavement, resulting in significant problems such as potholes or base failures, which cause the serviceability of the pavement to decline.
